Update on the Bubba Kegs

Ok so remember a few years ago, a smoker came out to rival the Big Green Egg, called the Bubba Keg Grill?  Well based on reviews from several BBQ blogs, it seemed to be a pretty good competitor especially considering the price.  Last year the named was changed to Big Steel Keg however none of the features changed.

Well, now this line of grills was purchased by a company named OMC.  And guess what?  The name is changing yet again based on a source on the forums for this product.  The new name will now be the Broil King Keg.  That’s right, iteration number 3 and there will be a more scaled down version to boot and that version will keep the old name of “Big Steel Keg”.  We’ve been working heavily on getting one of these units in for review since the first version.  We’ll post the review as soon as we get it.  There is still no word on the release dates.  For the time being here are some details on this so far:

I purchased a “BK-Keg” over the BGE due to comparison. The BGE is a fine unit but you have to buy the accessories, (ceramic cracking), the KEG is ready right out of the box, and about a hundred dollars less expensive, double steel lined and has better sealing. After years of using a cheap Brinkman and a lot of meat I have perfected the art of smoking: fish-venison-beef-birds-pizzas and vegetables. My first test run was a 22lb smoked turkey, 6 hours vice the 15 I monitored in the past, and it came out even moister than normal considering I was not familiar with vent control on the Keg. I really enjoy the solid construction and it’s high heat factor, you want quick smoked pizza, try it out (there is some trial and error). Not cutting the Eggheads, but being a retired Marine I believe the KEG would take a better beating, eggs crack easier than kegs unless it has beer inside.
